“The fifth day of May is the Dragon Boat Festival, Grandma told me to watch the dragon boats ……”
In the familiar rhyme, the people of Lingnan will soon celebrate another lively Dragon Boat Festival. Accompanied by the rising and falling sound of drums and passionate shouting, the Dragon boat training on the river is in full swing.

As a typical southern Lingnan water town, the Dongguan area is densely connected with a network of water and abundant resources. The people in this land have chosen to live in the waterfront. They have accumulated the wisdom to co-exist with water and make a living from it for years. With high speed of metropolitanisation, can we still live a life of take a stroll along the river and sing the songs of the fishermen’s life? Is the waterfront life that once existed fading away?

We hope to leave a pleasant and natural waterfront space for the emerging high-density city. The Longwan Wetland Park will restore the memories of waterfront natural scenery and waterfront lifestyle to the residents of Lingnan.

Gather with neighbours at night for a wonderful lawn concert. Watch the crowds in the square after dinner with the evening breeze by the river. Take your playful children out on holiday and make new friends at their favourite playground ……

Longwan Wetland Park is located in Wanjiang District, Dongguan City. It is the core node of the waterfront shoreline of Dongguan’s three rivers and six banks. The park is a high-quality waterfront space that brings the people back to the beautiful and eco-friendly riverbank. The core of our design is to recreate the relationship between the city and the river, and between the people and the shore.

Time connections:Preserve the ‘old’ steps and create a ‘new’ scenario

Based on the original concrete steps in the middle of the site, the functions are reorganised to sort out the relationship between seeing and being seen, activity and stillness; the new wooden deck chairs are added to give it a new function and experience, creating a comfortable and relaxing space.

On the official opening of Longwan Park to the public, the “2021 Dongguan City Lawn Concert” was held as scheduled to citizens, with the big steps functioned as an urban stage.

At the narrow ends of the site, we have used the minimum of interventions to preserve the well-grown arbours and the original topography, creating a boulevard of nature.

Keeping the memories of the site and adapting to people’ habits, we also hope to make more quality life happen in the park.

Connection of space: Establishing a spatial sequence of river-island-shore-city

我们希望建立从城市到江的完整联系,把公众带回曾经的水岸边。场地为公园使用者提供了不同层次的体验:第一层是龙形廊架,创造出必要的阴凉空间,在缓解夏日炎热的同时,也带来了看江的第一重视野,向内是城市,向外是自然;

We want to create a complete link from the city to the river and bring the people back to the waterfront where they once lived. The site provides different levels of experience for park users: the first level is a dragon corridor that creates an essential shaded space that provides relief from the summer heat while bringing a view of the river in the first dimension, inwards to the city and outwards to nature.

第二层是广场生活部分,这里是承载公园中大部分活动的空间,每天都在上演着不一样的精彩;

The second level is the square life section, a space that holds most of the activities in the park and offers a variety of excitement on a daily basis.

第三层是魅力水岸,为满足岭南居民的亲水天性,将原本生硬的驳岸敲开,形成可被淹没的低位区和满足安全性的平台区;

The third level is the attractive waterfront, meeting the desire of Lingnan residents to be close to water by cracking and open the original hard revetment to create a floodable low level area and a platform area to ensure safety.

第四层是生态岛,专门为白鹭和岛上的生灵保留了栖息地及安全距离,确保所有建设不干扰这里的“原住民”;

The fourth level is the eco-island, reserved as a habitat for egrets and other species on the island and maintained at a safe distance to ensure that all construction will not disturb the ” native inhabitants ” of the area.

The final level is the Dragon Tower, with a step-by-step change in height that provides a more open view at each level.

Natural connections: An approachable shoreline, the breathable East River

学习与自然的相处之道,让场地顺应东江的水文变化,是本次设计的一大立足点。根据东江二十年和五十年的水位变化,公园中设计了不同标高的空间,包括抛石区,安全水岸和雨季可被淹没区;

Learning to get along with nature and making the site responsive to the hydrological changes of the Dongjiang River is a major basis for this project. Based on the twenty and fifty-year changes in the water level of the Dongjiang River, we designed the park with spaces at different elevations, including a rock-throwing area, a safe waterfront and an area that can be flooded during the rainy season.

Removing hard vertical banks and replacing them with safe rock-throwing areas in the near-man areas of the riparianzone. A soft border of mudflat areas properly planted with Metasequoia and the native guinea grass. The inner bay of the site, where the cut-out shoreline forms a meandering, accessible water space, we have given a blank space to watch the natural breathing of the rising and falling waters of the East River.

Above the safe water level, we have reserved most of the space for a wide variety of recreational activities such as walking, dancing, walking with children, picnicking and sight-seeing.

Dragon Walk in The City of XIANG: A “bright spot” on the river

How many “dragons” are there in the park? Find out on the site!

The meandering dragon-shaped corridor is stylish and useful; the “dragon in the field” is lively and dynamic, offering children a chance to play freely; the “flying dragon in the sky” dragon tower is the high point of the site and a spiritual fortress; and the “dragon”,Dongguan, which is developing rapidly, is also becoming more and more eye-catching in the Bay Area.

Behind the Design: A return to waterfront lifestyle in the Lingnan

When we first arrived at the site, the sunset was reflected in the water of the East River, the ecological island in the middle of the riverbed was lush and green, and egrets were hunting for food and inhabiting on the shore. We were touched by these vivid and beautiful natural scenes by the river.

Through the research and sorting, we found that the original site had many problems that needed to be solved: the city road cut off the site from the external plots; the scale of the site was large, with no space contrast and no secret space, no eye-catching highlights; the river and the shore were completely cut off by rigid railings; the vertical shoreline appeared rigid and dull, the waterfront park should have had more accessibility to water, and water-related activities no longer existed.

The design strategy of “Based on natural humanism, Respect in situ innovation, Follow the shape and form, Be appropriate” has enabled us to create a waterfront park that is suitable for contemporary waterfront living in Lingnan. It is also a high-quality public space where life and leisure, culture and innovation, ecology and nature merge.

Looking out over the river,egrets flying in the breeze from the water, the sound of children’s laughter echoing in your ears …… In Longwan Ecological Wetland Park, you have all your expectations of life, and we have all our promises for the park. This is modern Lingnan waterfront life.

From the architects

Respecting the local culture, celebrating life and nature, and restoring the former waterfront life for the local residents are the starting point and core concepts of the design of Dongguan Longwan Ecological Wetland Park. In the specific design, we have responded to the natural rise and fall of water by adopting a flexible and resilient approach. We feel honoured to be able to restore a lively waterfront to meet the daily needs of the public to get close to the water. The successful implementation of the dragon boat pier further caters for the traditional festive activity of dragon boat racing, and we even learned that the dragon boat team has been training in Long Bay Park every afternoon since 3 June. The installation of these public spaces not only carries more and more activities for the public, but also takes the safety aspects of flooding into account, striving to strike a balance between humanity and ecology.

Also worth noting is the use of the large concrete steps on the original site. The design of the renovation reduces the carbon footprint of demolition and new construction, turning waste into treasure and allowing it to provide a new function and a new experience. In response to the warm climate of the area, the project also includes large areas of undercover and understorey space. When the park is newly built, the tree canopy may not yet achieve the desired shade, but the landscape always belongs to time and season, and I believe that over a period of time, Long Bay Wetland Park will become a better park.
